A nursing home in California, called the Verdugo Valley Skilled Nursing and Wellness Centre, was recently indicted by a grand jury on charges of neglecting and abusing a patient who killed himself.
The 34-year-old patient was admitted to the nursing home in January 2009. He had a history of mental illness and suicide attempts, and the home accepted him as a patient despite the fact that they were not equipped to handle such a patient. The man attempted suicide by placing a fire extinguisher in his mouth and rolling his wheelchair outside into traffic. The man was successful on his third attempt and died.
The case will heading to court on September 6, and the home faces losing its license and federal funding if convicted of the charges brought against it.
