A Virginia family that filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a sheriff and city jail doctor has been awarded $2.4 million by a Circuit Court jury. The family filed the lawsuit after a 46 year-old relative died of untreated pneumonia while behind bars.
The man was in jail after he crashed into a house. Emergency responders say that the man suffered a seizure while driving, which caused the accident. Law enforcement officers charged him with property damage and driving with a suspended license. While in jail, he did not receive his seizure medicaiton for over a week and was constantly ignored by guards and medical staff for severe pain in his abdomen, chest, and side.
The family sued the sheriff since he is liable for the physician's conduct, which was found to be neglectful.
