High school student killed in crash

Posted on Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 at 6:29 pm

A Sheboygan high school student was killed this morning in a pedestrian crash.

The 18 year-old man was on his way to school when a Department of Public Works leaf collection truck struck him on North Sixth Street and New York Avenue. Sheboygan police say it does not appear that any other objects or vehicles were on the street at the time of the accident that could have obstructed the teenager’s or driver’s view.

The young man died shortly after arriving at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center from internal injuries and head injuries. State troopers and Sheboygan police will reconstruct the accident.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the young victim.

Doctor sentenced to 5 years in prison

Posted on Tuesday, November 15th, 2011 at 7:28 pm

A Wisconsin doctor has been sentenced to five years behind bars and ten years extended supervision by a Wood County judge. The 49 year-old man plead guilty to four counts of second-degree sexual assault.

He is convicted of sexually assaulting his female patients while they were unconscious. The doctor worked as a gastroenterologist in Marshfield when the assaults occurred. In 2009, a woman woke up from the effects of anesthesia and found him touching her inappropriately. He immediately surrendered his medical license after being confronted.

His sentencing is significantly shorter than prosecutors were hoping; they urged the judged to give him 25 years in prison. However, the judge decided the man was genuinely remorseful and was seeking therapy, so he gave me a lower jail time.

U.S. government reaches settlement with widow

Posted on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011 at 4:34 pm

The U.S. government and the widow of a man who was killed in the 2001 anthrax attacks have reached a settlement in the woman’s wrongful death lawsuit. She was awarded an undisclosed amount but was originally demanding $50 million in economic damages.

In 2008, an investigation by the FBI concluded that an Army scientist sent anthrax-laced letters to media outlets and U.S. senators. The widow claims her husband’s death was a result of the government’s failure to secure the disease at a military laboratory.

The man died after being exposed to anthrax in the publishing office of the National Enquirer. A total of five people were killed and seventeen fell ill after handling the anthrax-laced letters.
