Minneapolis man receives 8th DWI

Posted on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 8:00 pm

A 47 year-old man from Minneapolis received his eighth DWI arrest in Clark County last week after leading police officers on a high speed chase.

For nearly half an hour, Clark County sheriff’s deputies and a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper chased the man through rural Wisconsin. The intoxicated driver reached speeds as high as 110 mph and law enforcement was forced to place tire spikes in order to stop the man.

Officers originally tried to pull the man over for speeding on Highway 29, but he took off. He is currently in the Clark County jail facing charges of drunk driving, driving with a revoked license, speeding, and fleeing from police.

NTSB urges cellphone ban

Posted on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 at 5:34 pm

The National Transportation Safety Board announced last week that it is proposing a nationwide ban on all cellphone use while driving, including texting, talking, and emailing. This ban would also include other kinds of portable electronic devices, but exclude GPS systems.

Several accidents over the past few years caused by distracted drivers on their phones has raised the board’s concerns. Just last year, a 19 year-old driver sent or received 11 text messages in just as many minutes before he caused a fatal multi-car pile up, which killed him and a 15 year-old student.

According to a survey the NTSB conducted, half of all drivers 21-24 years-old have admitted that they have texted or emailed while behind the wheel.

Freak elevator accident kills woman

Posted on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011 at 6:24 pm

A 41 year-old woman was killed this morning in Manhattan when the elevator she was walking into began to suddenly ascend, trapping her between the elevator shaft and the car. Officials say she was on her way to work at 285 Madison Avenue when the accident occurred.

Two people inside the elevator could not do anything as the elevator rose before becoming stuck between the first and second floors. They were not harmed but were taken to the hospital for psychological trauma.

An investigation is currently underway to find the cause of the malfunction. This summer, an inspection by the New York City Department of Buildings found a defect in one of the elevators.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.

Investigation finds carcinogens in fruit juices

Posted on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

An investigation lead by Consumer Reports shows that dangerous levels of the known carcinogens arsenic and lead are in fruit juices.

While the FDA claims that arsenic in fruit juices is organic, which is not carcinogenic, and “essentially harmless,” the results of the Consumer Reports investigation shows otherwise. Inorganic arsenic levels were found in apple and grape juices at levels that exceed federal drinking water standards. There is currently not a federal limit on inorganic arsenic in juices.

This form of arsenic is known to cause lung, skin, and bladder cancer, as well as increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, immunodeficiencies, and cardiovascular disease.
