Lunch boxes recalled for chemical leak hazard

Posted on Thursday, January 26th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

A potential chemical leak in a insulated lunch box set has caused California Innovations, Inc. to voluntarily recall nearly 250,000 of the lunch boxes.

The three piece lunch box set came with an aluminum bottle and a freezer gel pack, which contains poisonous chemicals. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, California Innovations received two reports of dogs chewing and ingesting the freezer gel packs. One dog was able to recover, while another one died.

The product is called the Ci Sport expandable, insulated lunch box set and was sold at Costco, Cost U Less, and Leon Korol stores. Consumers who have purchased the lunch box can return it to Costco for a full refund.

A 31 year-old Superior man is facing new charges after he and his girlfriend volunteered to work with young children.

The man was arrested in 1998 and convicted of second degree sexual assault. He must stay on the registered sex offender list for life. According to the Superior Police Department, the man has now been charged with failing to update his registry information, having a Facebook account under a false name, and working with minors.

A local pastor called the police after seeing a story about the sex offender in the newspaper. The pastor said the man would watch children younger than five while their parents would look for clothes at the church’s free clothing closet.

Posted on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 at 5:35 pm

The Swedish company, Ikea, has issued a recall of millions of “Antilop” plastic high chairs sold worldwide for a potential falling hazard.

About 169,000 high chairs sold in North America and 1.2 million in Europe are affected by the recall. Ikea received eight complaints worldwide of children falling out of the chairs after the belt restraint became unclasped. Three children sustained minor injuries due to the fall.

The “Antilop” high chairs came in white, red, and blue plastic seats with silver removable legs. They were sold in the United States from August 2006 to January 2010. Customers who have purchased the recalled product should stop using it immediately and can take it to any Ikea location for a free belt restraint replacement.

A San Diego man has been awarded $7.5 million by a jury for his slip and fall accident lawsuit against Starbucks Coffee Co.

Complications from a head injury he sustained in the fall has prevented him from coming back to work as a chiropractor. The jury found Starbucks negligent for not maintaining its property.

Starbucks Coffee Co. will pay $1 million to his wife for loss of consortium and the rest will go to the man’s lost wages, medical expenses, and loss of enjoyment of life.
