Milk Specialties Co. fined for plant explosion

Posted on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 10:20 pm

The Fond du Lac Milk Specalties Co. plant has been fined $72,000 by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration for a dust explosion.

Last summer, a fire and explosion occurred in a machine at the plant. Heavy smoke filled the five-story facility, causing all 50 employees to evacuate. An OSHA inspection found three safety violations, including a willful violation for dust combustible hazards.

Milk Specialties officials claim an explosion never occurred last summer. They say that a small piece of milk product began to smoulder and create smoke. The company has 15 days to accept or contest OSHA’s citations.

News anchor bitten by dog on air

Posted on Friday, February 10th, 2012 at 8:46 pm

A Denver news anchor is recovering after she was bitten by a dog while on the air.

The woman had the dog, its owner, and the firefighter who had saved the dog from an icy lake the day before on her show last week. The three year-old, 85 pound Argentine mastiff was calm throughout the segment until the anchor knelled down close to its face. The animal lunged and bit her on the face.

She had reconstructive surgery that night and is expected to return to work in a few weeks. The dog is currently quarantined by animal control as a precaution. The owner has been charged with violating leash laws and not having the animal properly vaccinated.

Birth control mix up could cause unexpected pregnancy

Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 7:34 pm

A mix up between birth control pills and placebos could cause women to become unintentionally pregnant. Pfizer has issued a recall of over a million birth control pills after discovering the sequence of placebos and contraceptives were out of order, which could cause the contraceptives to become significantly weakened.

The brand affected by the mix up is Lo/Ovral-38 and the generic forms norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol with expiration dates between July 31, 2013 and March 31, 2014. Women who believe they have a defective package should start using non-hormonal contraceptives immediately.

One woman in Georgia has already filed a lawsuit against Pfizer after she unintentionally became pregnant while taking birth control pills.
