Beware of Dog

For companions of man’s best friend, it is often difficult to remember that their four-legged friend is indeed an animal. Regardless of the best training and domestication, pets retain their animal instincts for seeking food, shelter, and safety. This is all well and good in the wild, but in the cities and towns where people keep pets, such behavior could lead to a dangerous accident.

There is a reason that the “Beware of Dog” sign was invented.

Aggressive breeds are more likely to attack a person even when not provoked. It is a dog’s breed, not necessarily its size or appearance, which dictates its temperament. The less amiable breeds include Chow chow, Chihuahua, Papillon, Old English Sheep Dog, Toy Poodles, Daschunds, Jack Russell Terriers, Giant Schnauzers, Pekingnese, Miniature Pinscher, and Cocker Spaniel.

The truth is, however, that any animal that is abused or neglected has the potential to be dangerous and aggressive. Even some more docile breeds will lash out by biting or scratching when they are provoked or feel threatened.

If someone is attacked or injured by a dog, they have a right to pursue the issue in a civil court. It is the owner of the animal who the law views as responsible for the dog’s actions. There are, however, exceptions to this law and it is important to be aware of them. The dog and dog owner are typically not liable for damages to a victim who was:

• Trespassing
• A veterinarian administering treatment
• Committing a crime against the owner
• Provoking the dog by physically abusing it
• Injured by a dog assisting the police or military
