The owner of a house or property has an obligation to keep their property safe and hazard-free. If a property owner fails to fulfill this obligation and a visitor or tenant on the property is injured as a result, the property owner may be held liable for the injury in a court of law. Next, you need to show evidence that, even though the owner knew about a safety hazard on his property, he failed to take the appropriate action, whether it be to repair an old staircase, remove exposed asbestos, or warn about a possible tripping hazard. This is known as breach of duty.

Finally, you must show a direct causal link between the safety hazard and your injury. This is not as easy as it may sound in some cases. You have to demonstrate that the owner’s breach of duty was the direct cause of your injury; otherwise, the owner cannot be held liable.
