Texting While Driving

Texting is a new mode of communication that has recently exploded in popularity. While the advent of texting has in some ways made personal and professional communication more efficient, it has also introduced new dangers that are only beginning to be addressed. One of the greatest risks associated with texting is the urge to text while driving. Driving while distracted is always dangerous, but because of the prevalence and popularity of cell phones, texting while driving may be the most widespread threat that road users face today.

Many people feel confident and comfortable enough with their driving that they feel they can multitask while behind the wheel with very little risk. However, recent studies show that texting while driving greatly increases your chance of having an accident.

A study by the American Automobile Association states that the collision risk while texting and driving is 50% higher than when you are driving without distractions. This seems to be a conservative estimate when compared with the results of a study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, which reports that the chance of having an accident while texting and driving is 23 times greater than when not texting.

Several states have already taken action on this new contentious issue by banning texting while driving altogether. Unfortunately these states are still in the minority and most states do not yet have a specific driving law against texting. While criminal cases cannot yet be filed in many states for texting while driving, a civil suit for compensation can be made for most texting while driving accident cases.
